What started as a simple swim in the cold waters of Königssee became an unforgettable moment for a 16-year-old girl. During a vacation in 2015 near the Bavarian Alps, she noticed something shining beneath the surface, about two meters deep.

A Bar of Pure Gold
The object was no ordinary item. It turned out to be a solid gold bar weighing 500 grams. Even more remarkable, it carried the stamp “Degussa Fine Gold 999.9,” indicating extremely high purity.
Degussa is known worldwide for producing certified gold products, and this particular bar was estimated to be worth around €16,000 at the time of the discovery.
Honesty Above All
Instead of keeping the gold or selling it secretly, the teenager made an unexpected choice—she handed it over to the police. Her intention was simple: to ensure that the rightful owner, if any, could claim it.
Under German lost property law, if a found item is not claimed within six months, ownership is transferred to the person who found it.
Authorities, including police divers, thoroughly searched the area for clues or additional items but found nothing. No owner came forward during the legal waiting period.
After six months, the gold bar was officially returned to the girl, making her its legal owner.
