In 1999, David Phillips, a civil engineer from California, pulled off one of the most clever travel hacks ever recorded. What started as a simple promotion quickly turned into a legendary story in the world of airline reward points.
A Brilliant Strategy Built on Simple Math
The opportunity came from a marketing campaign by Healthy Choice. The company offered around 800 frequent flyer miles for every 10 products purchased. Even better, purchases made before June would earn double—about 1,600 miles.
Phillips immediately saw potential. After analyzing prices, he discovered that small chocolate pudding cups were selling for just $0.25 each. Running the numbers, he realized that spending only $62.50 could earn him roughly 40,000 miles—enough for multiple international flights.
Without hesitation, he took action. Within days, he cleared out supermarkets in the Sacramento area, buying a total of 12,150 pudding cups for about $3,000.
Turning a Challenge into an Advantage
There was one major obstacle: each pudding cup had a barcode that needed to be manually removed and mailed in before the promotion deadline. Instead of handling it alone, Phillips came up with another smart move.
He donated all the pudding to a local charity, asking volunteers to help remove the labels. This not only solved his logistical problem but also earned him a tax deduction of around $800.
In the end, he collected approximately 2 million airline miles—enough for hundreds of flights, including routes like New York to Frankfurt.
From “Pudding Guy” to Travel Legend
His story quickly spread worldwide, earning him the nickname “Pudding Guy.” With his miles, Phillips and his family traveled extensively across Europe, the United States, and beyond.
Although he used up those original miles within five years, the story didn’t end there. Due to the massive number of miles credited at once, he achieved lifetime “Platinum” status with American Airlines. This gave him long-term perks like priority check-in, lounge access, and discounted flights.
A Hobby That Became a Lifestyle
After his pudding success, Phillips continued finding creative ways to earn travel rewards, eventually collecting over 6 million additional miles through various promotions. He became well-known among travel enthusiasts and often shares strategies on how to maximize reward systems.
To this day, he has visited more than 40 countries. Interestingly, despite his vast mileage balance, he sometimes pays cash for very cheap tickets—just to save his points for more valuable trips.
His story proves that with creativity, timing, and a bit of math, it’s possible to turn everyday opportunities into extraordinary experiences.
