My Inner 12-Year-Old Was Ready For Love – Ashley Judd Recreates Childhood Birthday Experience At 58

Ashley Judd is embracing healing, reflection and joy as she looks back on her latest birthday celebration.

The actress shared a deeply personal message on Instagram while posting moments from her 58th birthday, which she celebrated in April.

Rather than focusing only on getting older, Ashley explained that the day was really about reconnecting with her “inner 12-year-old.”
In photos from the gathering, the actress could be seen smiling beside a birthday cake decorated with the number 12 candles, a symbolic nod to the age she was emotionally revisiting.

“My inner 12-year-old was ready to receive love, care, attunement, delight, protection, and provision,” she wrote in the emotional caption.
Ashley said the idea behind the celebration was to give herself an experience she either never fully had growing up or one that lacked the comfort and emotional support every child deserves.

“Have you ever considered, from your adult perspective, restaging for your sweet inner child an experience she either never had at all?” she asked followers.

“Or an experience that did not unfold with the safety and attention it should have?”

The Emmy-nominated actress, whose parents are late singer Naomi Judd and Michael Ciminella, reflected honestly on childhood emotional gaps that still stayed with her over the years.

“Many of us grew up with unmet needs,” Ashley shared. “Today, as adults, we can listen carefully to those missings.”

She explained that while she remembered enjoying parts of sixth grade, she could barely recall her birthdays as a child.

One happy memory she did hold onto was learning square dancing during physical education classes at school.

Still, she admitted there was little emotional support waiting for her at home.

“There was no parent or adult supporting, nurturing, guiding and reinforcing my learning, delighting in, or protecting that little girl,” she wrote.
Ashley has spoken openly in the past about her difficult upbringing and struggles with depression. During a White House event in 2024 focused on suicide prevention, she revealed that her childhood experiences contributed to deep emotional pain and feelings of not wanting to be here. She also acknowledged the role treatment and healing played in helping her move forward.

Her mother, Naomi, d!ed in 2022 at age 76.

This year’s birthday celebration, however, carried a lighter and more playful energy. Ashley said loved ones helped create the experience through laughter, dancing and nostalgic activities that brought comfort and happiness.

“We backfilled what was always missing and no longer is, thanks to vulnerable imagination,” she wrote warmly.

The celebration reportedly included square dancing, playful moments with friends and even vintage hairbrushes used as pretend microphones while singing along to old Casey Kasem Top 40 hits.
